Archive for September, 2013

This week’s Thursday Thought comes from Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach, just outside New York City. Since we are now into the second week of September, many are adjusting to being ‘Back to School.’ For me, it’s been about 10 years since I was in high school, yet I still cringe when I hear “Back to School.” Part of that is because the phrase acts as a harbinger for less ‘beach days,’ but it’s also because I just hate school. There are many options that can suit YOU better for education than the conventional academic path. So I’m going to use this time to highlight just a few alternatives to the modern school system…..and then get ‘Back to the Beach.’

Now, I’m not naive enough to say that ALL schooling is bad. I know how ignorant that looks coming from the ‘school snobs’ who say that you NEED a diploma to ‘make it’ in life. No doubt there are professions where certain schooling is necessary. But at the same time, I want to stress that further schooling, especially college, is just not right for a lot of people. Actually, it’s mostly a rip-off, and there are several roads to the destination of success if one only looks at a map.

I’m sure you have all heard of the problems with the public school system, so I’m just going to briefly address post secondary education like in college and university.

Same Old Back to School Story

student loan debt 1 | Back to the Beach NOT Back to School | Thursday ThoughtWe have all seen the story. Someone goes to a university, just because that’s what they are ‘supposed’ to do. Well, that’s what everyone else is doing, right? They then take out student loans to pay for the tuition. Their major is eventually decided. Over several years, they graduate with a piece of paper that may or may not get them a job. But what they ARE assured, is over $100,000 of secured student loan debt. Thereby making them a debt slave. Let’s hear it for Freedom!

This whole setup should be seen as a red flag to people, but not enough people even care to look into it. The government guarantees the student loans, so the banks know that this debt can not be easily defaulted upon. And so the colleges are able to freely keep raising their tuition, because they know the money is relatively easy to lend. If the government would stay out of it, then a rational sound bank would have to vet and justify who got the loans. Thereby forcing the colleges to charge more realistic tuition fees, since the free money wouldn’t be so free anymore.

But as we have it, one of the next big crises will be the student loan bubble popping. Here you can see the student loan debt clock, and they even LEFT OUT capitalized interest!

Also note, since 2007, delinquencies on student loans have jumped 27 percent. And over that time the actual average debt per borrower  jumped from near $18,000 to over $23,000.  O.K. so even if it’s not $100k, that still could double with interest and penalties if one fails to pay for some reason…. Why even get tangled up in that?

Alternatives

The standard 4 year university just does not suit most people. You don’t actually have to go to the school to enjoy a college football game.

For your life’s work, why not start with what you are passionate about? Just look at all the people who found work, or passion for work, in areas other than their major.

How to get EDUCATION?

student loan debt 2 | Back to the Beach NOT Back to School | Thursday ThoughtThere are numerous ways to get education and knowledge. If your ‘love’ happens to require a 4 year degree, then look to get some credits at a community college first.  If your ‘passion’ requires no degree, then just start by apprenticing with someone in the field for a few years. A vocational education for a specific trade is a viable option as well. You could also just start out on your own, right now, and learn from your mistakes. Though keep in mind, while smart people learn from their mistakes, wise people learn from the mistakes of others.

In any case, you don’t need to become a debt slave to get a good education.

As has been stated previously, I even took up a course with TradeSmartU to learn how to trade options in the stock market. The price tag for that…. less than $1,000 for the year. The return on investment for that…… unlimited. The secured debt on that……zero.

What about The EXPERIENCE?

This one is easy. I can guarantee that you can get a college experience for the fraction of the price. How? Just go backpacking in Europe of South America for a few months. There you will likely meet more interesting people than you would at any school and you’d be saving a lot of money by doing so.

You could even apply for a visa to work at your destination. Then technically, you could have the experience, and still come back with more money than you left. AND you would have international contacts.

Seriously, think about your tuition costs. Now compare that to $1,000-2,000 dollars for a round trip plane ticket, plus any spending money or whatever you need. This seems to be a no-brainer for anybody unsure of their career path. While traveling, you may even find things of interest of which you had no idea.

Back To The Beach

Again, I understand that some people do need the modern 4 year (then more) school model. But I am talking to those of you who aren’t so sure. You have many more options than you realize. Instead of always doing what people expect you to do, consider doing what is right for YOU. It’s your life, not your friend’s, not your school counselor’s, not even your family’s…..It’s your life. Those other people won’t be on the hook for your student loans, YOU will…….(well, maybe eventually it’ll be the US taxpayer).

Many are getting into the routine of being Back to School, and Student Loan Debt is Crushing the System. I’m just going to go Back to the Beach, the season is coming to an end.

Capoeira vs Marine NOT | Friday Funny

September 6th, 2013 by Vigilo

For this week’s Friday Funny, we are using a fighting clip. You may have seen this before in a chain e-mail, or on youtube as, “Capoeira vs US Marine” or “Bolivian Kickboxer meets Marine.” But those labels are incorrect. So this opportunity will be used to provide something of humor, and still expose some truth.

In reality, this is not a Marine, or a real street fight, but these are actors. This is a clip from the movie Never Back Down. While the video itself is still somewhat entertaining, it’s also good to be aware of it’s origination. Some may still find it funny, even knowing it’s fake, and that’s fine. But just give a quick thought about other videos, chain e-mails and even news you receive that aren’t real. Or how many are purposefully misleading? If you would like to catch a few alternative news websites, check out this top 12 list.

Otherwise, enjoy the video below for what it is.

Well, we all know that the United States Marines exist for real. Attempting to add anything more in this limited space, wouldn’t do them justice.

Capoeira | Capoeira vs Marine NOT | Friday FunnyBut for those that don’t know, Capoeira also does exist. It is a Brazilian martial art form that uses dance and music and other acrobatics. You will find Capoeira artists incorporate many various moves, spins, kicks, and all around jumping all over the place. As with many other forms, Capoeira adds an emphasis on entertainment for the audience.

Contraceptives = Empowerment | Thursday Thought

September 5th, 2013 by Vigilo

Welcome to the FIRST Thursday Thought. So let’s jump right into it…. Browsing the CIA Factbook website, you can find an analysis of the prevalence of contraceptives determining women’s empowerment of a region. When I found this statistic, I thought, “What has the world become, that we can gauge a human’s success, based on it’s ability to prevent reproduction? Doesn’t that run contrary to just about every other living species?”

Well, as we can see by the evidence, Satan is leading souls astray all over the world. Just one of example is shown through the CIA analysis. It’s bad enough that the CIA uses the prevalence of contraceptives to determine development and women’s empowerment per country. What is even more disconcerting is that this indicator is actually accurate!

On the CIA website you will see this description:

This field gives the percent of women of reproductive age (15-49) who are married or in union and are using, or whose sexual partner is using, a method of contraception according to the date of the most recent available data. The contraceptive prevalence rate is an indicator of health services, development, and women’s empowerment. It is also useful in understanding, past, present, and future fertility trends, especially in developing countries.

Procinctu is ultimately an empowerment website, but do contraceptives equal empowerment? You will most definitely find that developed countries use contraceptives way more frequently than underdeveloped countries. The idea is that less kids equal a better life. Though that depends on the definition of ‘better.’ Is materialism and ease of life better? Or is a life with less ‘riches’ and more ‘family’ better? Which is more fulfilling?

Well, god…..I mean, Bill Gates…..has answered that question by taking a role in population control. He says, ….if we do a really great job on new vaccines, healthcare, reproductive health services, we could lower that (the population) by perhaps 10 or 15%.” Who is Bill Gates to say how many people should be on Earth, and what is the ideal standard of living?

Contraceptives Advance Moral Relativism

To me, this whole topic is a perfect case of moral relativism gone awry. What does it say about the human condition, that we can determine success through the use of contraceptives?

If you are religious, especially of Judeo-Christian faith, you know that God (the real one) said “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.” I suspect those words may have been fairly important since they were the FIRST WORDS God addressed to man. However, it seems people somehow confused that with, “Pervert sex and only multiply when it is easy and not stressful.”

pro-choice | Contraceptives = Empowerment | Thursday Thought

so you are pro-choice?

Being the unconventional website this is, humanity of modern day needs to be called out for it’s selfishness in this area. The pleasure derived from sex was intended to be a gift, from God to man, for partaking in His plan of populating the world. Instead, people steal the pleasure part and actually try not to conceive new life. Thereby making sex, which was supposed to be beautiful, into a perverted tool for pleasure……and this site has referenced the objectification of women in the past.

The ‘instant gratification’ culture of today only highlights the indignation of moral relativism. Yes, over time, many things change, but natural law is not one of them. Are we, in the year 2013, that much more entitled to live whimsically than someone from the years past? Is the (monetary) ability to have season tickets for football, and/or browse an Ipad, somehow more important then bringing another life into the world? People think that the world revolves around them and natural law changes with the times and their needs, but that is just not correct.

Contraceptives Worldwide

skirt skirting Contraceptives = Empowerment | Thursday Thought

skirting contraceptives

The uptrend in contraceptives is worldwide, and even runs across lines of all different faiths. It turns out, you really can chart the ‘development’ of a nation based on the contraceptive prevalence of it’s people. In Norway, 88.4% use contraceptives. England 84%. Switzerland 82%. United States 76.4%. Then on the flipside, in South Sudan, 3.5% use contraceptives. Chad 4.8%. Guinea 5.6%.

Now, I’m not advocating that living with filth and without food for the mere sake of making babies is commendable. But I am suggesting that we put sex, and it’s purpose, in the PROPER context, and not in the context that what we WANT. Consider valuing that which is really of value, and not that which is driven materialistically.

I know, this is deemed a throwback way of thinking. Some may say, “Travis? Oh, he’s nice, but he lives in the stone age.” Well that’s OK. In this world, I mostly don’t ‘fit-in’ nor don’t belong anyway. But then again, that is precisely why I know I AM supposed to be here….now. This particular thought made it to the site for the one (but hopefully more) person who needed to read it. Most people will cast this aside as whacked, or ignore it because it’s too hard and uncomfortable to address.

Sexual liberation has not made us more free, but it has introduced us to other forms of slavery…….slave to sex…..slave to material things…..slave to instant gratification.

Don’t be a slave.

~This was the first ‘Thursday Thought’ of many. It will be a relatively brief, weekly addition to the website. Topics will range from interesting, to boring, to important, to inconsequential……based on whatever thought came into my mind. Sound off in the comment section if you’d like.
