Salt is a lot like love…….WAIT!…..Don’t leave yet. You will soon learn the value of salt and the importance of using the correct type. The conclusion is that SALT is GOOD….very good….just hang in there and learn why.

You see, not all salt/love is created equal. Further, their historical importance is illustrated by the fact that they have both been involved life altering events, like the waging of wars. People have even accepted both as a wage payment for various reasons. But what would make salt so important that blood was shed over it? Can’t you just buy it in the store for a buck? Well, yes and no. Salt is good, essential actually, but it is the TYPE of salt that makes ALL the difference.


There is much conflicting information about salt..

  • Salt is good for you
  • Salt is bad for you
  • Low Salt diet is good
  • Low Salt diet is detrimental

The advocates of each of those statements will roll out their ‘facts’ as to why they know what’s right for you. Hopefully, by the end of this writing you will see that they are ALL correct.

Really, these misconceptions can be blamed on our language, especially the English language. It seems we are living examples of George Orwell’s 1984. In the book, with each passing generation, the vocabulary was reduced more and more. The result was an easily controlled, dumbed down population.

This is where we can see the salt / love correlation. Love is one word that means drastically different things depending on how its used.

In a restaurant – “I love this pizza”

At Thanksgiving dinner – “I love you grandma”

The womanizer – “I love you” (meaning I am evil and objectifying you)

In front of your boss – “I love this job”

In front of your co-workers – “I’d love to show boss-man a thing or two”

You see, a love for grandma is totally different from a love in lust. And the love of knocking your boss down a few pegs isn’t the same love you have for pizza. Come to think of it, maybe it’s not really the language that’s at fault, but our own laziness in how we use it. Words like passion, intimacy, fulfillment, care, pleasure, enjoy can easily be used to supplement ‘love,’ which naturally (in true Procinctu fashion) brings us to salt.

Like love, salt also has drastically different meanings.

Salt can be that table salt which is iodized.

Salt can also be sea salt which may or may not be processed differently than the iodized form.

There is Celtic sea salt in an unrefined state directly from the ocean.

Or upon pissing off someone, you could say “He’s gonna be salt.”

Here, you can see why salt advocates, for and against, offer such drastic views on salt. Different salts do different things. The REFINED iodized table salt is nothing like the UNREFINED naturally sourced Celtic salt from the sea. And a bad quality mislabeled refined sea salt is not the same thing as someones feelings.

As far as food is concerned, only one salt is superior. Unrefined salt is good and the most beneficial. You’ll know it by it’s coarseness, clumpiness, and color (not bleached white). Celtic Sea Salt is in this category. Though it’s equally attractive cousin, Himalayan Salt also ranks superior. In fact, as more and more contaminants reach our waters, Himalayan Salt will soon hold the lone spot as the superior salt if it hasn’t already. The reason for this is the Himalayan salt’s lack of exposure to impurities. However, for the purposes of this post, Celtic and Himalayan salt will have equal footing vs the refined salts. So let’s break down each salt so you know WHY Celtic and Himalayan Salt trumps all and why, ultimately, salt is good.

Aside from the standard salt shaker, this is the salt you find neatly packaged in all of your grocery store foods. When you see sodium on the labels in the store, you will likely be holding REFINED salt. Breads, chicken, cheeses, and other processed foods are the main carriers. Now comes the fun part.

Iodized table salt acts as a poison. Is that too harsh? You decide.

Refined table salt falls into the ‘processed foods’ category because it is manufactured much like an industrial salt. The salt is originally sourced from the sea or mined. But the train jumps off the tracks when it is then chemically treated and blast dried. This is done so that only pure sodium chloride crystals are remaining. But these actions lead to the ‘salt’ being STRIPPED of all of its other essential minerals as they are altered from their natural state.

This ‘stripping’ is similar to the impact pasteurization has on milk. (pasteurization kills beneficial bacteria in what should be raw milk) Just the alteration of minerals isn’t enough though. To add insult to injury, the ‘manufacturer’ usually adds an anti-caking agent to ensure free flowing salt….ah, yes, free flowing salt in nice little fine unnatural grains!

Then, to further denigrate the name of salt, they continue on to the final frankensalt product by adding things that ‘they’ think humans lack. Throughout the world, recent history has shown that iodine, potassium iodide, sodium iodide, sodium iodate, folic acid, iron, and even fluoride have been ADDED to salt.

You get it? They take out the beneficial minerals already in the salt, then add chemical alterations in their place. Cool, Huh?

Again, Keep in mind that pretty much any processed or packaged food that has salt or sodium in it uses this frankensalt (unless otherwise noted). This is dangerous as this consumption of what people THINK is salt, is really anything but. People are then left with a deficiency of the nutrients that the salt originally had. On top of that, the body becomes STRESSED internally through the metabolization of the frankensalt’s now unnatural sodium chloride. Whew!

SEA SALT  |  To be refined or not refined? That is the question.

Sea salt could be a better option, but still not so obvious. There are many different types and some are marketed incorrectly. Though we are led to believe that sea salt only comes naturally from the evaporating of salt water, this is not always true. Sometimes sea salt is processed the same as table salt with the only difference being its coarseness. Yet, other times, there may be no processing.

You really need to investigate on your own to know the source of a particular brand of generic sea salt. Again, you want to look for salt that is not chemically treated. It needs to be salt that is extracted directly through the evaporation of salt pan sea water. Celtic Sea Salt and Himalayan Salt are both perfect examples of good salt.

It’s really real.

Yes, salt IS good for you. When taken in it’s natural unrefined ocean form. It is a necessary and vital mineral for your body’s functionality. The complexity of minerals in Celtic sea salt provides the body with a much better balance of electrolytes and allows for better performance. Even ailments, allergies, blood pressure issues, and other problems may be reversed through the consumption of natural, unrefined Celtic and Himalayan salts. Consuming anywhere between 1.5 to 3 teaspoons of this unrefined salt a day will do your body good. (assuming you cut out the poison salt)

REFINED Salt is bad for you

Yes, salt IS bad for you. When the refined iodized form is taken in large doses, it can cause bodily harm to your person. In order to metabolize, the body takes water from surrounding cells to focus on breaking down the sodium chloride. The balance of the body is then compromised and the now dehydrated cells could die off early. This could also result in excess fluid in the body tissue. The excess fluid could lead to external side effects like cellulite, arthritis, gout, and gall bladder stones. Over-consumption can also lead to internal destruction like heart and blood pressure problems.

Low REFINED Salt diet is good

Yes, low salt diets are good so long as you are eliminating the iodized table salt type. But make sure NOT to cut out the unrefined salt like Celtic sea salt. To avoid repeating, we will instead give a tip for when you DO have refined salt, as it is unavoidable sometimes. To be realistic, you may find yourself in a restaurant or not having the luxury of cooking your own meal. For the times you unwillingly or unwittingly consume refined salt, you can offset the effects with water or a from potassium source.

Low (UNREFINED) Salt diet is detrimental

Yes, a low salt diet is detrimental. You will miss out on all the benefits listed above in the “UNREFINED Salt is good for you” section. But also, your body’s functionality will decrease without the necessary minerals. You definitely need unrefined salt if you live in a hot climate, exercise regularly, sweat profusely or consume a lot of water. Replenishment of minerals lost, especially through sweat is a must. Muscle movement, nerve impulses, and your cell quality will all suffer if you do not replenish correctly.

This can also lead to the prescription drug pandemic we currently have. People will take a pill for a symptom, which causes another symptom. Then they take another pill for the new symptom, and so on. When it’s quite possible that all they really needed was a natural replenishing of SALT!

Think about it. When you sweat, what does your sweat taste like? Don’t act like you never tasted your sweat before. We know you’ve licked your lips when sweating and liked it enough to do it again. What did it taste like? SALT! Fact is, your sweat is not freshwater. Just like at the beach, the water is salty. So that said, wouldn’t it make sense to replenish it with salt of the earth….they way nature intended. Why would anybody replenish it with some altered embarrassment of a replica?

While scouting for prospects, keep in mind that the detrimental salt will try to lure you like a temptress through processed and packaged foods. These shelf foods are a huge source of the detrimental salt. Avoid these and don’t let her poisonous venom get past your radar. While in a ‘grocery’ store, be aware that bread, chicken, and even cheese harbor most of the sodium you will consume in your diet. Try to find food that is totally natural with no sodium added. If it is added make sure they use UNREFINED salt.
