Letters to My Teenage Sister – Leggings (and Yoga Pants)

  • Posted April 8, 2014

Hey Sis,

I noticed you leave the house with some pretty revealing clothing. Well, I have no desire to see your every crevice, and I don’t desire that every man, out and about, see your every crevice neither.

In case you aren’t aware, leggings are a form of undergarment. They are not intended to be worn as actual pants, but more like panty hose….to be worn UNDER your pants or skirt. As such, when you do wear them, you should definitely be sure that your behind (and front) is at least covered by your shirt.

Along with leggings, yoga pants are also not intended to be regular pants. They are called yoga pants because they are pants appropriate for yoga.

Leggings and yoga pants themselves are not bad, but when you misuse  them, you are inviting yourself to be objectified. Sure you can wear leggings around the house when you want to feel comfortable. Sure you can wear yoga pants in a private or intimate workout setting. However, there is no reason to wear leggings or yoga pants in public as your only pants. Displaying yourself in such a manner is disrespectful to you, and to whomever you call your husband later in life. Not to mention the offense against God. You are inviting yourself to be visually violated, and encouraging a desecration of your temple. Trust me on this, I’m a guy.

I know sometimes you probably want to feel sexy while out, but you really should guard your modesty. By flaunting your sexuality, you will only attract men who see sexuality first, and they likely won’t be desirable guys to have around anyway. Their very being will regard you as a sex object first and foremost, and the value they put on your inner self will be secondary.

There’s no sense me harping on this further, you get the point. In closing, I want to share a quote from Saint John Bosco. “Purity is a precious jewel, and the owner of a precious stone would never dream of making a display of his riches in the presence of thieves.” So when you present yourself in public, I hope that you do so while keeping in mind the value of your riches.

Love, your ‘ornery’ brother Travis
